Florida Knowledge Test Format
Computer-based test at any FLHSMV service center
The Florida FLHSMV knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. You must score 80% or higher to pass — that's 40 out of 50 correct. The test is untimed, so take as long as you need. It is available in English only and is taken on a computer at any FLHSMV service center. The knowledge test fee is included in the $48 Class E license application. If you fail, you can retake the test for $10 each attempt with unlimited retakes allowed.

No Vehicle Inspection
Florida does not require annual safety or emissions inspections. There is no state vehicle inspection program.
Move Over Law (All Vehicles)
Must move over for ANY stationary vehicle with hazard lights — not just emergency vehicles. Reduce speed to 20 mph below the posted limit. Expanded January 2024.
Texting While Driving Ban
Texting is a primary offense since 2019. First offense: $30 fine, second: $60. Hands-free phone use required in school and work zones only (not statewide).
Slow-Poke Law
Left-lane drivers must move right for faster traffic on multi-lane roads. Violation carries a $179 fine plus 3 points on your license.
Toll Roads (SunPass)
Florida has extensive toll roads including the Turnpike and expressways. SunPass, E-PASS, or Toll-by-Plate are used for electronic toll collection.
Hurricane Evacuation Routes
Florida activates contraflow lanes on major highways during hurricane evacuations. Follow official evacuation route signs and never drive into flooded roads.
Headlights When Wipers On
Florida law requires headlights to be on whenever windshield wipers are in continuous use due to rain or other conditions.
