The Famous German Autobahn
Is There Really No Speed Limit?
Yes and no. Germany is famous for having sections of Autobahn with no speed limit, but:
- Recommended speed (Richtgeschwindigkeit): 130 km/h
- About 30% of the Autobahn has permanent speed limits
- Temporary limits apply in construction zones, bad weather, and high traffic
Important: Watch the Signs!
Many sections have limits of 100, 120, or 130 km/h. Variable speed limit signs change based on conditions.
Speed Limits by Road Type
Autobahn (Motorways)
- No general limit - but 130 km/h recommended
- Minimum speed: Vehicles must be capable of 60 km/h
- Check signs constantly as limits vary by section
Outside Urban Areas (Ausserorts)
- Maximum: 100 km/h
- Applies to all roads that aren't motorways
Urban Areas (Innerorts)
- Maximum: 50 km/h
- 30 km/h zones are common in residential areas
Speeding Penalties in Germany
German fines are relatively low compared to other EU countries:
| Excess Speed (Urban) | Fine |
|---|---|
| Up to 10 km/h | €30 |
| 11-15 km/h | €50 |
| 16-20 km/h | €70 |
| 21-25 km/h | €115 |
| 26-30 km/h | €180 + 1 point |
| 31-40 km/h | €260 + 1 point |
| Over 40 km/h | €400+ + 2 points + ban |
Tips for Driving on the Autobahn
