Penalties & Fines

Speeding€20–€800 fine; 1 point from 21 km/h over the limit, up to 2 points and a 1–3 month driving ban for serious excess.
Driving Under Influence0.5‰: €500 fine, 2 points, 1-month ban. From 1.1‰ (or 0.3‰ with unsafe driving) it is a criminal offence: a fine or up to 1 year in prison, plus licence withdrawal for at least 6 months.
Points System8-point Flensburg system: written warning at 4–5 and 6–7 points; licence withdrawn at 8.
Mobile Phone Use€100 fine, 1 point (€150–€200 and 2 points if it causes danger or damage).

Recent Law Changes

2024

A 3.5 ng/mL THC blood limit for driving took effect on 22 August 2024 after cannabis legalisation: €500 fine, 2 points and a 1-month ban (zero tolerance for novice and under-21 drivers).

2025

The theory-test question catalogue was renewed in April 2025 — trimmed from 1,197 to about 1,040 questions for class B, adding e-scooter, pedelec and THC content and new image questions.

2024

A 2024 reform of the Road Traffic Act (StVG) gave municipalities easier powers to set Tempo 30 zones — for example near schools, pedestrian crossings and playgrounds.

2021

The StVO / Bußgeldkatalog reform raised speeding fines and made blocking the emergency lane (Rettungsgasse) punishable by a fine and a 1-month driving ban.
