Turn Rules in the UK 2025 - Give Way Guide

💡Quick Answer

UK drives on the LEFT! At unmarked junctions, give way to traffic from the RIGHT. When turning right (across traffic), give way to oncoming vehicles. No "priority from right" like in Europe.

Turn Rules in the UK

Remember: Drive on the LEFT!

This affects ALL turning rules:

  • Keep left on the road
  • Overtake on the right
  • Right turns cross traffic (like left turns in Europe)

Give Way Rules

At Unmarked Junctions

  • No automatic "priority from right" like in Europe
  • Generally, major road has priority
  • If unclear, proceed with caution
  • Give way to traffic already on the road you're joining

At Give Way Signs

  • Slow down, be prepared to stop
  • Give way to traffic on the main road
  • Don't need to stop if clear

At Stop Signs

  • Must come to complete stop
  • Proceed only when safe
  • Rare in UK compared to other countries

Making Turns

Left Turns (Minor Turn)

  • Keep left
  • Signal left
  • Simple turn, staying on your side
  • Give way to pedestrians crossing

Right Turns (Major Turn - Crosses Traffic)

  • Position toward center of road
  • Give way to oncoming traffic
  • Signal right
  • Wait in junction if necessary
  • Complete turn to left side of new road

Yellow Box Junctions

  • Don't enter unless exit is clear
  • EXCEPTION: You CAN wait in box to turn right
  • Cameras often enforce this

Mini Roundabouts

  • Give way to traffic from the RIGHT
  • Can drive over the white dome if necessary
  • Signal as for normal roundabouts

Traffic Light Rules

  • Green: Go if clear
  • Amber: Stop if safe to do so
  • Red: Stop
  • Red + Amber: Prepare to go
  • Green arrow: Proceed in arrow direction only
