Eligibility by Nationality

🇪🇺EU/EEA Citizens

An EU/EEA driving licence is valid in Czechia for as long as it remains valid — there is no obligation to exchange it and no deadline. Exchange for a Czech řidičský průkaz is optional (useful for a lost/expiring card or point-system administration); the voluntary fee is CZK 200 standard or CZK 700 express.

🇺🇸🇬🇧US/UK Citizens

The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are all parties to the Geneva 1949 (and, for the UK, Vienna 1968) Road Traffic Convention, so a standard US/UK/Canadian/Australian licence conforms and is exchanged directly with NO theory or practical test. The mandatory exchange is free (standard 20-day issuance). This is handled at any obecní úřad with extended powers (ORP).

🌍Other Non-EU Citizens

Czechia decides exchange eligibility by convention conformity, not bilateral agreements. A non-EU licence that conforms to the Vienna 1968 or Geneva 1949 Convention on Road Traffic is exchanged directly with no theory or practical test — and the mandatory exchange is free. A licence that does not conform requires a theory re-examination (přezkoušení) plus a medical certificate. A resident must exchange within 3 months.

🎓Students

You may drive on a valid foreign licence while you are a short-term visitor. The 3-month exchange obligation is triggered by permanent residence, or temporary residence on a long-term visa exceeding one year — students on such a permit must exchange within 3 months of its legal effect.

Required Documents

  • ✓Valid identity document
  • ✓Valid foreign driving licence (surrendered when the Czech licence is collected)
  • ✓Proof of residence / habitual residence in Czechia
  • ✓Official translation of the foreign licence, if the issuing office requests one
  • ✓No printed photograph is needed — the ORP office takes it on site
  • ✓Non-conforming licences only: theory re-examination result (max 30 days old) and a medical fitness certificate

Costs Breakdown

Conversion/Exam Fee
Mandatory exchange of a conforming non-EU licence: standard 20-day issuance is free (Zdarma); express 5-working-day issuance is CZK 700. Voluntary exchange of an EU/EEA licence: CZK 200 standard / CZK 700 express (CZK 160 / CZK 560 if filed online).
Medical Exam
Not required to exchange a conforming licence. For the non-conforming-licence route a medical fitness certificate is required; the GP/clinic sets the fee (commonly a few hundred CZK).
Translation
Certified translation of the foreign licence — only if the ORP office requests it; paid to a translator
Total Estimated
A direct exchange of a convention-conforming licence costs CZK 0 at standard speed. Only express service (CZK 700) or the non-conforming route (CZK 200 plus the medical certificate) adds cost.

No Agreement (Full Test Required): Czechia has no bilateral-agreement system — eligibility is decided purely by whether the foreign licence conforms to the Vienna 1968 or Geneva 1949 Convention. A non-conforming licence requires a theory re-examination (přezkoušení z odborné způsobilosti, result no older than 30 days) plus a medical fitness certificate; the fee is CZK 200.

Tips for Expats in Czechia

  • 💡Eligibility is decided by convention conformity, not bilateral agreements — a standard US, Canadian, Australian or UK licence is exchanged with no test, just like an EU one.
  • 💡The mandatory non-EU exchange is free at standard (20-day) speed — you only pay for express service or the non-conforming-licence route.
  • 💡The 3-month deadline runs from the legal effect of your residence permit, not from when you start driving — missing it means driving on an unrecognised licence.
  • 💡You surrender your original foreign licence when you collect the Czech one; some countries will not return it, so plan ahead if you may move home.
  • 💡EU/EEA licences never need to be exchanged — many expats exchange unnecessarily.
  • 💡Czechia enforces a zero-tolerance alcohol limit (0.0 g/L BAC) — one of the strictest in Europe.

From a recent expat graduate

A real story from someone who got their licence as a foreigner

Passed in Chile·May 3, 2026
“I find the service invaluable. It helped me immensely and I am impressed by the format and content. First class!”

I have now passed my driving theory test. The course and information was great and very helpful. The reason I had to take the test is because I am living in Chile which does not recognise the driver licence of my mother country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do US, Canadian or Australian drivers have to take a test to exchange their licence in Czechia?
No. Czechia decides exchange eligibility by whether the licence conforms to the Vienna 1968 or Geneva 1949 Road Traffic Convention — not by bilateral agreements. The USA, Canada and Australia are all Geneva 1949 parties, so a standard licence from those countries is exchanged directly with no theory or practical test, and the mandatory exchange is free. A test (a theory re-examination) is required only for a licence that does not conform to the conventions.
How long do I have to exchange my licence?
A non-EU licence must be exchanged within 3 months of the legal effect of your permanent residence permit, or of a temporary/long-term residence permit exceeding one year. EU/EEA licences never need to be exchanged. The 3-month clock starts from the residence permit, not from when you begin driving.
What does it cost to exchange my licence?
A mandatory exchange of a convention-conforming non-EU licence is free at standard 20-day issuance; express 5-working-day issuance costs CZK 700. A voluntary exchange of an EU/EEA licence is CZK 200 (standard) or CZK 700 (express). The non-conforming-licence route costs CZK 200 plus a medical certificate. There is no driving-school cost involved in a licence exchange.
Is the Czech theory test only in Czech?
The official state theory exam is administered in Czech, but an applicant who does not understand Czech may sit it with a court-appointed interpreter, arranged and paid for by the applicant. Practice tests in the Ministry's eTesty system are available in Czech, English, Russian and Ukrainian. Note that exchanging a conforming foreign licence requires no exam at all — the exam only applies to obtaining a Czech licence from scratch or to a non-conforming licence.
Is there really zero alcohol tolerance?
Yes. Czechia enforces a 0.0 g/L blood-alcohol limit for all drivers — any amount of alcohol while driving is an offence. A small 0.2 g/L measurement margin exists only to account for instrument imprecision, not as a legal allowance.
