🇪🇺EU/EEA Citizens
EU/EEA licences are valid for driving in Spain while in force and exchange is voluntary (DGT: "Tu permiso europeo es válido para conducir en España mientras esté en vigor"). Renewal in Spain becomes mandatory only 2 years after you establish residencia normal if your licence has no expiry date, a Group I validity longer than 15 years, or a Group II validity longer than 5 years.
🇺🇸🇬🇧US/UK Citizens
UK / Northern Ireland licences: direct exchange under the bilateral agreement in force since 16 March 2023 — the DGT convenios table records car and motorcycle as "SIN PRUEBAS" (no tests). Fee: 28.87€. For C / D categories see the DGT UK canje page for current requirements. USA, Canada and Australia: no agreement — you must pass the full DGT theory and practical tests.
🌍Other Non-EU Citizens
Exchange is possible only if your country has a bilateral agreement with Spain (see list below). Without an agreement you must pass the full DGT theory and practical tests.
🎓Students
Students on an estancia por estudios may use their foreign licence (plus IDP) during their authorised stay. The 6-month canje window begins when you establish residencia normal (long-term TIE or EU Registration Certificate), not when you arrive.

Tips for Expats in Spain
💡UK/NI licences: since 16 March 2023 you exchange without tests — one of the most common expat wins.
💡Permiso B theory exam (car) can be taken in English, French or German at the DGT terminal — select your language at registration. Motorcycle (A1/A2) and moped (AM/LCM) exams are Spanish or co-official only.
💡Book the medical report (psicofísico) and the DGT cita previa the same week — the report is only valid 90 days.
💡You need a TIE (or EU Registration Certificate), not just an NIE number — plan this before you apply.
💡Bilateral agreement list changes: always re-check dgt.es before paying for translation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take the Spanish driving test in English?
The Permiso B (car) theory exam can be taken in English, French or German in addition to Spanish and the co-official languages (Catalan, Basque, Galician, Valencian) — you pick your language when you register for the exam. Motorcycle licences (A1, A2), the moped exam (AM/LCM) and lorry/bus categories (C, D) are only offered in Spanish or a co-official language. The practical exam is always in Spanish or a co-official language. Practise with AutoviaTest in English first so you are confident on exam day.
How long can I drive in Spain with my foreign license?
For a non-EU licence, once you establish residencia normal in Spain the licence is valid for up to 6 months. After that you must exchange it (if your country has a bilateral agreement with Spain) or pass the full DGT theory + practical tests. EU/EEA licences are valid to drive in Spain while in force (DGT: "Tu permiso europeo es válido para conducir en España mientras esté en vigor"); renewal in Spain becomes mandatory only 2 years after residencia normal and only if the licence has indefinite or very long validity. Non-residents — including students on an estancia por estudios — may keep using their foreign licence (plus IDP where applicable) during their authorised stay.
Can I exchange my UK license for a Spanish one?
Yes. Since 16 March 2023, UK and Northern Ireland licences are exchanged under the Spain-UK bilateral agreement. The DGT convenios table records car and motorcycle as "SIN PRUEBAS" (no tests). The fee is 28.87€ (Tasa 2.3) and you need a DVLA or DVA "Check Code" plus the standard documents. Since 6 November 2024 the DGT no longer requires you to submit a paper photo for the canje. For C or D categories, check the DGT UK canje page for the current test requirements.
Can I exchange my US license for a Spanish one?
No. The USA does not have a bilateral exchange agreement with Spain, so US citizens must pass the full DGT theory test (available in English, French, German or Spanish) and the practical test (in Spanish) to obtain a Spanish driving licence.
Do I need an NIE or a TIE to exchange my license?
You need a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) as a long-term resident, or the EU Registration Certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano UE) if you are an EU national. A bare NIE number is issued to non-residents too and is not sufficient to prove residencia normal for licence-exchange purposes.
How much does the license exchange cost?
The DGT fee for a Group I (car/motorcycle) canje is 28.87€ (Tasa 2.3 in the DGT 2026 fee catalogue). You also pay the informe de aptitud psicofísica at an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores (rate set per centre, not DGT-published) and, for non-EU / non-Latin-script licences, an official sworn translation (sworn-translator rate). If your country has no agreement and you have to take the full DGT tests, you pay the corresponding exam tasas published annually in the BOE plus any autoescuela classes you choose.
Do I need to enroll in an autoescuela in Spain?
No. The DGT allows candidates to present themselves to both the theory and practical exams "por libre" (as independent candidates) without going through an autoescuela — the DGT itself states that attending a driving school is the usual route, not a legal requirement (source: dgt.es, "Requisitos, preparación y presentación a examen"). In practice most full-test candidates still use an autoescuela because enrolment streamlines the cita previa, fees and exam-car rental.
What are the minimum ages to drive each vehicle in Spain?
Under the Reglamento General de Conductores (RD 818/2009): AM (moped / ciclomotor up to 50 cc) — 15 years. A1 (light motorcycle up to 125 cc) — 16 years. B (car) — 18 years. A2 (medium motorcycle) — 18 years. C1 (medium lorry) — 18 years. C (heavy lorry) — 21 years. D1/D (minibus / bus) — 21/24 years. You must hold a valid licence for the category you drive.
What is the DGT Permiso B theory exam and how is the pass mark set?
The Permiso B theory exam is set by the DGT from the official question bank (covering traffic signs, priority, speed limits, alcohol and drugs, vehicle maintenance and other road-rule topics). The DGT publishes sample exams ("tests gratuitos") on its site and confirms that your real exam will use the same format and number of questions as the samples (source: dgt.es, "Requisitos, preparación y presentación a examen"). Check the DGT for any format changes in force at the time you sit your exam.
What is the psicotécnico / informe de aptitud psicofísica?
It is the combined medical and psychological assessment the DGT requires before issuing or exchanging a Spanish licence. You take it at an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores (CRC), not at your GP. The CRC checks eyesight, hearing, reflexes, reaction time and any relevant medical conditions and issues an "informe de aptitud psicofísica". The report is valid for 90 days — if that window elapses before you submit your DGT application, you must repeat the assessment.
How do I book a DGT appointment (cita previa)?
Appointments are booked through the official sede electrónica at sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/cita-previa/. You pick the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico (your province office) and the specific procedure (for example "canje de permiso" or "examen teórico"). Availability varies heavily by province, so check the site as soon as your documents are ready. Bring the originals plus the DGT fee paid in advance (Tasa 2.3 for a canje, or the exam fee for a new licence).
What languages is the practical driving test in?
The practical driving exam is always conducted in Spanish or one of the co-official languages of the autonomous community where you test (Catalan in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Valencian in the Valencian Community, Basque in the Basque Country and Navarre, Galician in Galicia). English is not offered for the practical. Basic Spanish comprehension is therefore needed to follow the examiner's route instructions.
How does the Spanish points-based licence system work?
Spain operates a points-based driving licence (permiso por puntos) established by Ley 17/2005 and consolidated in RDLeg 6/2015. New drivers (conductores noveles) start with 8 points; after 2 years without any points-losing infractions they move up to the standard 12 points, then to 14 after another 3 clean years and to a 15-point maximum after another 3 clean years (source: dgt.es — "Cómo funciona el permiso por puntos"). Points are deducted for infractions listed in the annex to the law. If you reach zero points, your licence is suspended and you must pass a DGT recuperation course and exam to regain it.
Can I exchange my Swiss, Norwegian, or Icelandic licence in Spain?
Yes. Switzerland is on the DGT bilateral exchange list, and Norway and Iceland are covered through the EEA. All three exchange without theory or practical tests for Group I categories (car and motorcycle). You follow the standard canje procedure at the DGT — informe de aptitud psicofísica, TIE or EU Registration Certificate, original licence, 28.87€ fee.
Can I exchange my licence from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru or another Latin American country?
Most Latin American countries have a direct exchange agreement with Spain — including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay (current DGT list). Mexico is not on the list, so Mexican licence holders must pass the full tests. Venezuela was previously on the list but is no longer active. Always re-check the current DGT list before paying for sworn translations.
Can I exchange my Japanese, South Korean, or Philippine licence?
Yes. Japan, South Korea and the Philippines are all on the current DGT bilateral exchange list, so you can exchange without theory or practical tests for Group I (car and motorcycle). The DGT canje fee is 28.87€ (Tasa 2.3). Check the country-specific DGT canje page for whether a sworn Spanish translation of the original licence is required for your country.
Can I ride a 125 cc motorcycle in Spain with just my Permiso B?
Yes, under strict conditions. Article 4.2 of the Reglamento General de Conductores (RD 818/2009) allows Permiso B holders to ride an A1-category motorcycle (up to 125 cc and 11 kW) only within Spanish territory, only after holding the Permiso B for more than 3 years, and only when at least 21 years old. The allowance does not apply in any other EU country — for that you need a full A1/A2/A licence.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Spain?
An IDP is a translation of your foreign licence, not a separate permit to drive. EU/EEA licences need no IDP in Spain. Non-EU licences issued outside an agreement country are generally expected to be accompanied by either an IDP or an official sworn translation so Spanish authorities can read them; check the DGT "Conducir en España con un permiso extranjero" page for the current rule that applies to your country of issue. An IDP never extends the 6-month grace period — it only translates the licence itself.
What if my foreign licence expires while I am in Spain?
You cannot legally drive on an expired foreign licence. Renew it in your home country before it expires, or — if you are already eligible for a canje — complete the exchange before the expiry. An IDP alone does not extend validity; it is only a translation of a still-valid licence. If your licence expires before you can exchange, you will normally have to pass the full DGT tests instead of exchanging.
What happens if I fail the DGT theory or practical test?
You can retake each DGT exam. Each attempt requires you to pay the corresponding DGT tasa again (the current amounts are published by the DGT at the sede electrónica fee catalogue). After you pass the theory, the DGT gives you a limited window to complete the practical — see your convocatoria paperwork for the exact validity period that applies to your cohort. If you are enrolled at an autoescuela they usually require additional classes before booking a new practical slot.
What is the V-16 beacon and does it apply to me?
From 1 January 2026 the V-16 connected beacon is the only legally valid preseñalización-de-peligro device on Spanish roads — the red warning triangles are retired from that date (source: dgt.es, "Dispositivos de preseñalización V16"). The V-16 is a small IoT beacon with 360° light for at least 30 minutes that transmits its location to the DGT 3.0 platform. If you drive a Spanish-registered vehicle after that date you must carry one; for foreign-plated vehicles travelling in Spain, check the DGT page for the latest guidance before your trip.
Is the Spanish driving licence valid across the EU?
Yes. The Spanish Permiso de Conducción is an EU-format licence and is recognised in all EU/EEA countries. Under Article 12 of RD 818/2009, Group I permits (AM, A1, A2, A, B, B+E) are valid for 10 years up to age 65 and 5 years thereafter, renewed with a fresh informe de aptitud psicofísica at each renewal. You do not need to re-exchange the licence when you move within the EU.
Can I start practising for the theory test before I have a TIE or NIE?
Yes — you can start learning with AutoviaTest in English at any time, including before you move to Spain. You only need a TIE (or EU Registration Certificate) at the moment you submit the DGT application or register with an autoescuela. Many expats study the question bank for several weeks before their residency paperwork is finalised so they can sit the exam as soon as they can book.
