Blood Alcohol Limits in Denmark
All Drivers
- Maximum: 0.5 promille (0.05%)
- Same limit for all driver categories
- No special limits for new drivers
Penalty Categories
0.5-1.2 promille
- Fine: Monthly salary × promille
- License suspension: Conditional
- Example: 0.8 promille = 0.8 × monthly salary
1.2-2.0 promille
- Higher fine
- Unconditional license suspension
- Possibly alcohol lock requirement
Over 2.0 promille
- Very high fine
- Prison possible
- Unconditional license loss
- Alcohol treatment may be required
Fine Calculation
Denmark uses unique formula:
- Fine = Monthly gross salary × promille level
- Very high earners pay very high fines
- Minimum fine applies
Alcohol Lock (Alkolås)
- May be required after offense
- Vehicle won't start without breath test
- Typically 2 years
- Alternative to longer ban
Important Notes
- Police can stop anyone for testing
- Refusing test = treated as high BAC
- Causing accident while drunk = severe
- Insurance may not cover drunk driving accidents
