IDP Not Required

EU/EEA licences are valid with no time limit. Visitors from outside the EU can drive on a valid foreign licence, carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official French translation if it is not in French. New residents may drive on a non-EU licence for 1 year, then must exchange it — possible only for countries (and US states) that have a reciprocity agreement with France.

FAQ: Driving in Paris

Do I need a car in Paris?

No. Paris has world-class metro, buses, and is walkable. A car is only useful for day trips outside the city.

What is the Crit'Air vignette?

An emissions sticker (Crit'Air) required to drive in the Grand Paris low-emission zone (ZFE). Order it online before your trip — foreign-registered cars included. The most polluting vehicles (Crit'Air 3, 4 and 5) are restricted on weekdays, though penalties for the permanent zone are suspended during a grace period until the end of 2026; stickers are still checked during pollution peaks.

What is priority to the right?

At unmarked intersections, vehicles from the right have priority. This is a key French driving rule that catches many tourists.
