V-16 emergency beacon
From January 2026, Spanish-registered vehicles must carry a V-16 emergency beacon instead of warning triangles. The V-16 is placed on the roof of your vehicle — you don't need to exit onto a dangerous road to set up triangles.
At an accident
- Stop safely, turn on hazard lights
- Activate V-16 beacon on the roof (visible up to 1km)
- Put on reflective vest (before exiting if needed)
- Call 112
- Help injured if safe to do so
- Exchange details with other parties
Required equipment
- V-16 emergency beacon (mandatory from 2026)
- Reflective vest
- Warning triangles (still recommended as backup; mandatory for foreign-registered vehicles)
- Spare tire and tools
Tips
- The V-16 beacon has a battery life of ~30 minutes and flashes amber
- Foreign-registered vehicles still need warning triangles
- Always put on your reflective vest before exiting the vehicle
