Where to Get IDP: Apply in your home country before traveling. Cannot be obtained in Vietnam.

Scooter & Motorbike Rental in Hanoi

Daily Rental Cost

100,000 - 200,000 VND/day ($4-8)
License Required

You need an IDP with motorcycle endorsement (A1/A2). Many tourists ride without, but insurance is void and fines are strict.

Insurance Warning

Most travel insurance does NOT cover scooter accidents without a valid IDP. Check your policy carefully.

Rental Tips

  • Never leave your passport as deposit - leave a photocopy instead
  • Take photos/video of the scooter before renting
  • Check brakes, lights, and horn before accepting
  • Rent from hotels or established shops, not street vendors
  • Always wear a helmet - it's the law and saves lives

Traffic Rules in Hanoi

Local Traffic Rules

  • 1Horn is used constantly as a communication tool, not aggression
  • 2Traffic flows around obstacles - go with the flow
  • 3Turning right on red is often tolerated but not officially legal
  • 4Pedestrians have NO right of way - cross slowly and predictably
  • 5Lane discipline is minimal - expect vehicles from all directions

Common Tourist Mistakes

  • Stopping suddenly - keep moving predictably
  • Making sudden turns without checking all angles
  • Expecting cars to stop at crossings
  • Driving too fast in the Old Quarter
  • Not using horn to signal presence

Horn Culture

Honking is normal and expected. A quick beep means "I'm here" not "move out of my way".

FAQ: Driving in Hanoi

Do I need an IDP to rent a scooter in Hanoi?

Legally yes. Vietnam requires an IDP with motorcycle endorsement. Many rental shops don't check, but without IDP your travel insurance is void and you face fines up to 1.2 million VND if stopped by police.

Is it safe to drive a scooter in Hanoi as a tourist?

Hanoi traffic is chaotic but manageable if you stay calm, go slow, and follow the flow. Start in quieter areas first. The biggest risks are inexperience and no insurance coverage without IDP.

What side of the road do they drive on in Vietnam?

Vietnam drives on the right side of the road, same as continental Europe and the Americas.

Can I use my car driving license to rent a scooter?

No. To legally ride a scooter/motorcycle in Vietnam, you need an IDP with a motorcycle endorsement (category A). A car-only license doesn't cover two-wheelers.
