Roundabout Rules in Italy
Modern vs Traditional Rules
Italy has been updating roundabout rules:
- Modern roundabouts: Yield to traffic IN the roundabout
- Traditional roundabouts: May give priority to entering traffic
- Check the signs! They indicate which rule applies
Standard Rules (Modern)
- Yield to vehicles already circulating
- Drive counter-clockwise
- Signal right when exiting
- Check mirrors before changing lanes
Lane Selection
| Your Exit | Entry Lane |
|---|---|
| First exit | Right lane |
| Second exit | Right or center |
| Third+ exit | Left/inner lane |
Signaling
- No signal required when entering
- Signal RIGHT when exiting
- Signal when changing lanes in multi-lane roundabouts
Italian Roundabout Peculiarities
- Many city roundabouts are small
- Some historic roundabouts (like Piazza Venezia) have unique rules
- Roundabouts with traffic lights follow the lights
- Some have multiple lanes with marked arrows
Step by Step
- Approach: Slow down, check for yield sign
- Yield: Wait for vehicles in roundabout
