The Famous German Autobahn

Is There Really No Speed Limit?

Yes and no. Germany is famous for having sections of Autobahn with no speed limit, but:

  • Recommended speed (Richtgeschwindigkeit): 130 km/h
  • About 30% of the Autobahn has permanent speed limits
  • Temporary limits apply in construction zones, bad weather, and high traffic

Important: Watch the Signs!

Many sections have limits of 100, 120, or 130 km/h. Variable speed limit signs change based on conditions.
