Getting Your UK Licence

Step 1: Apply for Provisional

  • Can apply at 15 years 9 months
  • Receive it at 16
  • Valid for 10 years

Step 2: Theory Test

  • 50 multiple choice questions (43 to pass)
  • Hazard perception test (44 points to pass)
  • Valid for 2 years

Step 3: Practical Test

  • Around 40 minutes
  • Includes independent driving
  • One or two reversing manoeuvres
  • Must show me, tell me questions

New Driver Restrictions

For first 2 years after passing:

  • 6 points = licence revoked
  • Must retake both tests
  • This "probationary period" is strict

Costs

  • Provisional licence: £34
  • Theory test: £23
  • Practical test: £62 (weekday) / £75 (weekend)
  • Lessons: £25-40 per hour (varies by area)
