Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Global Driving Test Rankings database?+
AutoviaTest's Global Driving Test Rankings is a set of data-driven comparisons of driving-test and licensing systems across 60+ countries. Each ranking measures a specific dimension — theory difficulty, alcohol limits, speed limits, minimum age — and ranks countries from strictest to least strict. The underlying data is sourced from official licensing authorities and normalised for direct comparison.
How are countries ranked in each category?+
Rankings use a single numeric metric per dimension: pass mark percentage (higher = stricter), BAC alcohol limit (lower = stricter), highway speed limit (lower = stricter), minimum driving age (higher = stricter). Countries using non-standard scoring systems are excluded from the relevant ranking where direct comparison is impossible.
Which country has the hardest overall driving licence system?+
There is no single "hardest" because different dimensions capture different kinds of difficulty. Japan and Greece lead the theory pass mark ranking, Norway and Switzerland are near the top for alcohol strictness, and Nordic countries dominate the slowest-highway ranking. AutoviaTest also publishes a composite Driving Test Index score on each country landing page that combines these dimensions.
Are these rankings updated regularly?+
Yes. AutoviaTest's ranking data reflects the most recent values from official licensing authorities. Rankings are automatically regenerated when any country's underlying data changes. Each ranking page shows its last-updated date at the bottom. Current database: 67+ countries. Last update: April 2026.
Can I use this data in my own research or article?+
Yes. AutoviaTest's rankings are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence. Attribution is required — a link back to the specific ranking page or to AutoviaTest.com is appreciated. For large-scale data use or custom exports, contact AutoviaTest directly.
How is this different from a Wikipedia comparison table?+
Wikipedia entries cover individual country licensing systems in depth but rarely rank or compare them. AutoviaTest's rankings are built specifically for cross-country comparison, with normalised units, consistent methodology, and linked sources. Every ranking page also links directly to AutoviaTest's free practice tests for each country's theory exam.
